“Jo’s new album ‘Beneath The Starry Sky’ marks a progression into a more fully produced roots and Americana arena for her while staying true to the folk sensibilities..a fabulous singer & a wonderful album” – Edwina Hayes – Singer/Songwriter

“Beautiful vocals and harmonies combine for a CD all will enjoy” – Gwenda Shearer for The Orcadian

With her crystal clear, soulfully expressive vocal, Jo Philby is one of the most endearing folk singers to emerge from Orkney in recent years. Having met widespread acclaim in 2009, her debut CD Saltwater and Stone was very much a labour of love, a long time in the making. Now, having found and developed her niche, and gathered together a band of good friends (who also happen to be cracking musicians), she is back with Beneath the Starry Sky.

Originally from the south of England, Jo’s early inspiration stemmed from the English and Irish traditions, however over a decade living and working in Orkney now sees her cite singers from the modern Scottish folk scene as equal sources of influence, as well as country and bluegrass musicians and singers. As such, her new line-up and CD bring a much fuller “roots” sound – and one that reflects its recording in both Orkney and in Nashville, Tennnessee, with Orcadian expat Philip Anderson.

2013 has been a busy year as Jo toured the South of England with Aidan Moodie & Elaine Grieve during the Spring. The Jo Philby Band played at this year’s acclaimed Orkney Folk Festival. They are also playing at the Festival Club at the mid-summer International St Magnus Festival,Orkney – in a marquee no less!

This is a rare chance to hear Jo & her band in the intimacy of our recently refurbished hall as part of her first Scottish Tour.

Jo will be accompanied by Orcadian musicians – young & up & coming guitarist, Aidan Moodie, Graham Rorie – mandolin/fiddle  from popular local band, Broken Strings. Elaine Grieve will be playing guitar/mandola & beautiful breathy harmonies. Together they will take you on an uplifting musical  journey through song.
